One of your friends recently had a birthday celebration, but you missed it and you forgot to tell your friend that you couldn’t attend.

Write a letter to your friend. In your letter

  • Apologise for missing the birthday celebration

  • Explain why you missed and why you didn’t tell your friend

  • And say what you would like to do to show that you are sorry.

Dear John,

Hope you are fine and you had a great birthday celebration.

I am sorry that I was not there to celebrate with you. I didn’t even let you know that I wouldn’t be able to come. I feel terrible that I didn’t even find time to contact you.

The truth is that, I had been under a lot of stress at work last week. All of a sudden I have been told to attend a meeting at Paris for a client. I had to prepare all the documents and agenda for the meeting. My flight was scheduled early morning. So there was no chance to attend your birthday celebration. I had even no time to inform you anything.

I really hope you will forgive me. By way of an apology I have bought tickets for both of us to go to see the football match next Saturday which is there at the Diamond Stadium.

I hope you will come.

See you soon,

Your best friend recently sent you a present by courier. You want to thank him/her.

• Say how you felt when you received the present.

•Describe what you like about it.

•Explain how you will use the present.

I am grateful for the fact that you remembered my birthday and even bothered to

send me a gift with happy birthday wishes in so beautiful words. Thank you so much!

When I received your gift through courier delivery, I was surprised!  When I opened

the gift, I never expected an iron as a gift. I was so much in need of it. How in the

world did you know exactly what I needed? I appreciate your gift-giving skill.

Your gift is so special because it is a cordless iron and I travel a lot for my work. This

iron is very light in weight and small in size, also it runs on battery so I can easily carry

it anywhere. It’s definitely one of the best and coolest gifts I’ve ever been given.

You know quite well about my dressing sense. I hate wrinkled clothes. At some

locations where I travel for my project work, it is difficult to get laundry service so it will

be very useful for me.

Your thoughtfulness really made my birthday memorable this year.

As a secretary of an international club you invited a foreign delegate whose speech was admired by all members of the club. Write a letter to the delegate
– thank him for his presence and explain why everyone liked his talk
– tell him all the club members want more information about his country
– schedule another meeting with him and invite him to attend that meeting

Dear Mr. Patrick,

We are grateful for the time and effort you took to share your thoughts and experiences with us. We all agreed that your lecture was the most interesting one we have had this year.

Please accept our sincere appreciation for the outstanding presentation you made at our Club about “Water Conservation”. Since we are entering a new growth phase on water conservation, your comments were very timely. I believe we can benefit immediately from the methods you have suggested. The slides you showed gave us a close look at the techniques of water conservation.

Water conservation involves many strategies. Good water conservation programs are neither quick nor easy. We would like to know more how you implement in Israel with ease in cost effective way and skillful marketing.

We look forward to your visit to our club and discuss to explore more on the subject. We hope to involve you more in our meeting next month.  It is an honor and privilege to invite you again. This is schedule for Saturday the 8th of December, 2017 at the same venue in New Delhi.

We will be thrilled to see you again.

Yours sincerely,

Alex Smith

As a result of advances in medical care, average life expectancy is increasing for men and women. Do you think most people will see this as a positive development? What are the disadvantages of an ageing population for individuals and society? Support your point of view with a reason and/or example from your own experience or observations.

The continuing scientific and medical innovation has increased the years of human life. For many people, it will be favorable but on the other side, there are unfavorable consequences too . I personally believe that the advantages of this trend over-weigh the disadvantages.

I truly believe that longevity has always been considered as a kind of treasure and fortune, and wisdom is usually linked with the elder, so long life helps to promote the harmonious relationship among family members.  As for society, long life allows people to contribute to the world with their talent and wisdom.  For example, Boyzone singer Stephen Gately died suddenly because of health problem at the age of 33. He would have reached the very pinnacle of the music world if he had got to live longer. Therefore, people living longer can make more contributions to the world so long life is a symbol of civilization and better life.

Though that people live longer is good news, the great pressure to support old parents may lead to the cracks of relationship between children and parents. There are old people who cannot afford to live in nursing homes and have no child to rely on, so it is the responsibility of the government to help the old. A bigger life span does not necessary mean good health. In spite of the advances in medical technology, there are still many diseases that cannot be treated efficiently, and the increasing population is challenging the tolerance of the planet but in my opinion the problems can be tackled with the joint efforts made by the people and government.

In conclusion, while there are some reasons to believe the disadvantages of aging population, my own view is that what world can get from the phenomenon of people living longer is irreplaceable and undeniable.

Some people say that having many TV channels is good, while others argue that it reduces the quality of programs. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

People have different opinions about having large number of TV channels. Some feel that they have a world of entertainment in their hands, while others are grudging about their degradation in the content value. In my view, it is definitely an immediate source of entertainment with a wider choice but at the same time, there are many junk programs we stumble upon while flipping different TV channels.

TV industry has become too big. Economy of screen production is increasing day by day. Mostly, all the broadcasters have more than one channel. I appreciate programming diversity. It satisfies the peculiar entertainment tastes or interests of some or others. It promises to provide a little something for everybody. Though with digitization, it has become very expensive to go for DTH (Direct-to-home satellite) service but we have a choice with many options in the subscription plan when money is tight in a family. We can get mainstream channels in minimum plan.

However, racing among broadcasters has led them to beat the competition by doing the same as another channel except at a different time, so If there are 5 channels which offer more or less the same thing, is that choice?  For business opportunity, many channels are hiring inexperienced artists or newcomers. Sometimes they prove better but if they fail to perform better, there is a risk of quality deterioration and it often happens. I believe that content is king. I have observed that many times content is not original or it is weak and it lowers the rating of that particular programme.

To conclude, I believe that variety of choice is always appreciated and there is more TV than there is life but it is a cruel blessing sometimes.

Company’s top level authorities should or should not take employees suggestions or ideas to take any decisions. Discuss and give your opinion.

There are different opinions whether to bring staff members on-board when deciding about the company's future or not.  In my view, to include the employee’s thought  can be advantageous but some decisions should be left to the management.

In my view, foremost advantage of employee participation is that it helps in motivating the employees. This is because when the employees are said to participate in important meetings they also feel special and get encouraged for delivering good work in the near future.. When diverse group of employees will be there to participate in a discussion, it is obvious to get creativity in the work as every person would give his or her own idea and that ultimately will distinguish the work from others. The employees tend to work more as they also become part of the policy making process. It helps in the growth of employees as well as the organization.

However, I believe that there are some policies which are not to be discussed by the company to the subordinates. Sharing the valuable information with high chunk of employees in organization can term into greater risk as the chances of getting information leaked is more. Also, if the subordinates are given more freedom, they might not perform well thinking they are now no longer subordinates as they share equal space like others in the meetings and the seminars. The subordinates should not be always part of the meetings and the discussions, as at times it is difficult to make them understand the concept on which the discussion is to be done.

To sum up, more the different ideas a company will generate, more the output will increase but there are some reasons why the employee engagement must be avoided by the company.

Foreign visitors should pay more than local visitors for cultural and historical attractions. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

It is argued that/ some people believe that travelers from overseas should be charged more than local residents to visit important sites and monuments. I completely disagree with this idea.

Maintenance of the historical and cultural attractions is the main reason for the argument to charge more to the foreign tourists but in my knowledge, governments keep the fund reserved for such places. Also the states where these places are, already getting subsidies from the government. Moreover, foreign tourists also contribute to the economy of that country where they visit by spending on a wide range of goods and services, like hotels, food, transport etc. so apart from tourism industry, there are many industries related to the tourism industry which are benefiting and increasing the revenue of the countries so governments should encourage people from the rest part of the world to visit their countries.

Tourists always plan a budget before visiting any places. If they realised that the price is higher in a particular country to visit historical and cultural attractions, they would perhaps not prefer to go to there and may change their destination. Charging tourists on the basis of nationality is also a short sighted view.  Reputation is the base of tourism industry so this idea won’t help to promote the nation’s cultural heritage.  The relationship of the country and their tourists are like host and guest and if this relationship is cordial, there would be no risk of insufficient funding or the damage of reputation.

To conclude, I believe that it would be counterproductive to make them pay more than local residents so every effort should be made to attract tourists from overseas.
